High Atlas

Snow peaks, terraced valleys, and villages that keep their own time.

An hour from Marrakech the land rises into the High Atlas, North Africa's great mountain range, with peaks above four thousand metres and Berber villages built into the slopes. It is the easiest escape from the city: a private 4x4 into the valleys, a guided walk to a waterfall, lunch with a local family, and the Kasbah du Toubkal or a mountain spa for the night.

Planning notes

Planning time in the High Atlas

The High Atlas is North Africa's highest mountain range, culminating at Mount Toubkal (4,167 m). Its valleys and Berber villages start about an hour from Marrakech, which makes the mountains an easy contrast to the city. Days are built around private 4x4 routes, guided walks, lunch with local families and stays in kasbah lodges.

Best time to visit
April to October for walking. From December to March the peaks are often snow-covered and nights are cold.
Getting there
About one hour by road from Marrakech to the first valleys.
How long to stay
A day trip, or one to two nights in a kasbah or mountain lodge.
Pairs well with
Marrakech, Agafay and the road to Merzouga.
